I was wondering if this was going to be about firefly predation. I guess we all have to be careful about things that are other than what they seem.
There is a fascinating anecdote in a Barbara Kingsolver book - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - where she visits a farm out in PA and they go out to a field in the car at night, driving without the headlights. They get to this huge meadow that is pitch black and then the driver quickly flashes the headlights and the field erupts in fireflies.
Excellent article. The deceptive females are sometimes referred to as femme fatale fireflies. Last summer, I posted a photo of one in the process of consuming the male of another species.
