Name that plant

I bought it at a supermarket. It blooms once a year but not at all if it is moved. It is very sensitive to changes in the length of daylight which trigger blooming. I thought it was a type of Christmas cactus but it actually isn't. It's Mexican and I think its name begins with a "t" but I've forgotten it. I have it labeled tithonia because that is the name that comes to mind when I try to think of the real name.

Dear Anonymous,
Yessir, that's my baby! Thanks for such a swift response and the googling revealed that it isn't just mine that is temperamental. Also, now I know why it dropped its blooms suddenly this year. A cold draft from a briefly opened window.

Well I can see why you forgot the name. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. When I saw it, I said to myself, "Oh yeah that's that wannabe cactus plant aunt Cynthia has." Because that's pretty much how I remember horticultural nomenclature.

You didn't happen to create that stand and pot the plant is in, did you Mr. Cezanne? lol
Very pretty. Is it residing in Florida or NY?

No, ewe, the pot is from a roadside potter's stand in western Mass. the little collapsable stand is from Gracious Home, an overpriced Manhattan furnishings trap. We have been hesitant to put real furniture in our NYC place until the renovation is done. That process involved a law suit and is finally coming to a good end.

This plant, now named Cynthia, is in NYC.
