Sudden summer rain

Sad is the first time you run to seek shelter from a sudden summer rain, for it marks the day you leave your childhood and enter the unnatural world of Grown-Ups. We excite ourselves about making this transition, and once we have, we strive for years to wedge ourselves more deeply into the narrowing ductwork of adulthood, until with luck we squeeze through the last few twists of it, and uncork ourselves where that same rain lights up our eyes. We run into it, drenched and home again.

As I walked the two blocks from the bus stop to my apartment Wednesday evening about 6:30 during a deluge, I made my way under a small umbrella that was not doing much good. There was a a fellow who lives in my building sans umbrella and in shorts who was shouting as he got completely soaked, "It's beautiful! It's like nature is giving the world a shower!" I ALMOST put down my umbrella at that point.

Waaaay back when I was a kid in Florida, you could set your watch by the rain. Every summer day at 4:30 the sky would open up and a deluge would soak us for an hour. We'd see the rain coming and jump on our bikes to race. Who could reach the end of the street before the rain did? An hour later the steam would rise from the streets and the water would drain through the sand; no standing water anywhere. And we'd be soaked.

My sister tells me that rain is rare these days. The water table has dropped from increased use, and not enough water evaporates to make those pop-up showers a daily event. Ah, sweet childhood. Thanks for taking me back, Father T.

That was beautiful. The view from your condo is stunning under every sky. Wow.

My sons and I frequently go for walks in the rain. We stomp in puddles and revel in the drenching. There are whoops of glee. Of course, most of my neighbourhood thinks I'm crazy.

What a nice little video. Hearing the sound of rain made me feel relaxed...and horny.

Dear Cooper, This is the view from the condo of friends where I have been encamped while my new kitchen is assembled. I am a short walk down the beach in a highrise visible in this vid and in the waterspout photo.

Dear Eriknucklecrack, you're easy.

If I always sought refuge under an umbrella in the rain, even as a child, does it mean I've never left my childhood or that I never entered it?

Dear David, a wise question is the first indication that you'll reach a wise answer.
