Straight, Not Narrow

The blog Straight, Not Narrow has picked up on something I wrote on Bilerico. I wonder how many straight married couples secretly agree with the premise that the glorification of marriage is undeserved.

I think the Religious Right has made an idol of straight marriage. (Also of virginity, but that's a topic for another time.) I don't know anyone who would venerate the reality of marriage; the ideal is unattainable until you throw out the expectations that come with the cultural "norm." Once free to create your own relationship, marriage—or not—of any two souls can attain that intimate respite for which we all yearn.

HUH?????? That check in the mail is not undeserved or at the very least would not be taken for granted by me. It could be the difference between serenity and homelessness.
